sandra porter rwa

Sandra Porter RWA is a contemporary abstract artist interested in the power of repetition and the symbiotic relationship between Painting and Printmaking. She attended Somerset College of Arts & Technology Foundation Course, studied Fine Art at Stourbridge College of Art and gained a Masters in Fine Art, Painting from Chelsea School of Art in 1981. She later studied Printmaking with Master Printmaker Dorothea Wight in the 1990s. She has exhibited widely in a thirty year career latterly in New York and France as well as the UK and her work can be found in Private & Public Collections including Arther Anderson, the Government Art Collection, Hammersmith Council & the Tate & V & A Libraries.

Sandra Porter’s work explores a fascination with the power of repetition. Through playing with grids, stripes and recurrent schemes often sourced from architecture, she creates series of images that are similar but not the same. Pieces differ; reflect each other yet also work independently. Recent prints and paintings are ever evolving improvisations around the stripe and grid format that searches for a synthesis between the horizontal and vertical stripe together with the all-important negotiation of monochrome, colour and definitive mark.

Whilst colour, structure and pattern are the means by which she interprets the ancient and modern worlds, she remains deeply affected by the art of the early Italian Renaissance as well as the traditions of Modernism, Constructivism, Minimalism and Abstract expressionism.
